It is a bit of a sporting region for the city with the Newcastle racecourse to the southeast of the stadium, the Newcastle Showgrounds and Newcastle Entertainment Centre just to the east of the ground whilst the cities athletics field is right next door.

This match always brings back memories of the 2001 season, when the two sides met in the Grand Final that years, where it was the Knights who came away with the win and the title, helped by a Clive Churchill winning performance by the immortal Andrew Johns.
