Stadium

For much of the clubs history, it was the centrally located Willows that was their home ground but in 2012, the club moved to the AJ Bell Stadium in Baton-upon-Irwell which hasn’t proven to be the huge catalyst for the club that they had hoped for.

The stadium is a modern compact ground that mixes standing terraces with modern seating areas but when not full, it can feel a vast stadium and loses its atmosphere far too easily.

Location

The clubs traditional home was the Weaste area of the city of Salford in Lancashire but now they are based in the Barton-upon-Irwell district of the Greater Manchester city of Salford.

About

Just as the club have moved around the city they represent, the club have also changed the name that represents them.

For much of their history they were simply known as Salford RLFC but in more recent times they have gone by the names of the Salford Reds, the Salford City Reds and there current name of the Salford Red Devils.

No matter what you know the club as, they are one of the most historic Rugby League sides in the world and whilst they have won plenty on the national scale down the years, things have been baron in that regard for some time now- although they have flirted with success in recent years and that has created lots of news for fans to keep up with.

History

The club were formed by boys from the Cavendish Street Chapel in the Hulme district of Manchester way back in 1973 but it was a struggle to gain enough players.

The decision was quickly made to remove the links to the school and the new name Cavendish Football Club was chosen and they also moved across the River Irwell to play in Ordsall.

Another move was quickly on the cards to Mile Field in Trafford before moving to New Barnes.

In 1979, the club rebranded once again as Salford Football Club but they continued to struggle which led to a merger with Crescent Football Club and a period of growth was enjoyed.

The club produced players for Lancashire and even for England. In the run up to the Northern Union, the club moved again, changed there playing colours from amber, black and scarlet to red and faced sanctions for paying players.

Despite that, the club remained loyal to the RFU but that only lasted a year before they joined the breakaway code and they soon enjoyed success including making it to the 1900 Challenge Cup final, which they lost to local rivals Swinton.

In 1900, the club were forced to leave New Barnes which saw them move to land owned by the Willow Estate Company and that would go onto to become there home for well over 100 years and would see all of the glory years of the club.

Salford would become a cup specialist and in the first decade or so of there time at the Willows, the club would reach a number of semi-finals and finals of the cup but it would take until the 1914 for them to win their first cup final and pick up their first major piece of silverware.

It has been the cup that has continued to prove their most fruitful competition with a number of wins down the years with their golden years of the 1930’s and 1970’s proving the most successful period.

It was during the 30’s when they picked up their first and only 1st Division title when they were declared the champions of England in 1938.

At the start of the summer era of the sport it was proposed that Salford would merge with Oldham to form a new Manchester club but that was resisted after protests from both clubs fans and Salford missed out on the new top flight.

To herald in the new era, the club did change their name to Salford Reds and after defeating Keighley to in the First Division, Salford gained promotion to the Super League.

In 2022, the now named Salford City Reds suffered relegation, but they remained full time upon relegation and soon made the step up to the top flight once more after defeating Leigh in the National League Grand Final.

Things have been up and down ever since their return to the top flight with some season seeing them battle against the drop or picking up the wooden spoon whilst some seasons have seen them push the top clubs and even reach the Super League Grand Final.

The club were re-branded under owner Marwan Koukash who spent heavily on aging and players known for off of the field issues but now they have found their feet once more as a hard working club representing their city to the best of their ability.
