About
The 13 man code of Rugby broke away from the RFU in 1895 in the main to provide a more exciting, skillful, and faster version of Rugby and that is something it has continued to do to this very day.
Back then, it was all about putting on the best possible show to get fans into the ground to pay to watch the sport.
Nowadays, the entertainment on offer still attracts 100’000’s of fans into grounds around the world each weekend but it is via television, social media, and streaming services that the action attracts the most eyeballs.
That has seen the sport spread well past its heartlands of England, France, Australia, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea to where it is now truly a global sport and that means we have to search sources from around the globe to bring you all of the latest news and information.
History
The sport developed out of a number of Northern England based Rugby sides who missed to turn professional and who wished to offer more exciting Rugby to their fans in what was to go on to be called the big schism in the sport that left Rugby with 2 codes.
In a meeting held at the George Hotel in Huddersfield, now known as ‘The Birthplace of Rugby League’, 22 clubs (although Stockport were not at the meeting in person) decided to breakaway and form the Northern Union, which developed into Rugby League Football and the global sport that we all know and love.
From that meeting in 1895 the sport quickly changed its rules to speed things up and to make players fin the need to develop their skills and fitness levels including the abolishment of line-outs in 1897, the professionalism of the sport in 1898, the reduction to 13 players on each side in 1906 and the ending of the dull ruck after a tackle, with the play of the ball replacing it.
In a similar fashion to the split of the sport in England, in 1907 a meeting was held at the Bateman’s Hotel in Sydney where a number of clubs decided to turn their backs on the Union code in Australia and to form the New South Wales Rugby Football League which would go onto to see the new code become the dominant force in Rugby across the key states of New South Wales and Queensland- something which continues to this very day.
The North of England, South of France, New South Wales, and Queensland are known as the heartlands of the sport and it is in these regions where the professional sport still has its biggest impact and most success but in the modern era, the game has grown to become a truly global sport.
