The club are based in the French city of Toulouse which is due north of Andorra and north east of Perpignan.

The city is one of the largest in France and is famed as the centre of the European aerospace industry.

Just as the north west of England and Yorkshire is thought of as the heartlands of the sport in England, it is the south west of France that is the heartlands of both codes of Rugby in France and Toulouse as been one of the most longstanding and successful cities for the sport in the country.

About

Toulouse Olympique are one of the oldest Rugby clubs not just in France but in continental Europe who have enjoyed lots of ups and downs down the years that have sent them spend periods simply struggling to survive and periods of immense success and of course they like all French clubs had to survive its attempted annihilation by their own government but now they are on a upward trajectory again and gaining new fans across the globe.

History

The city of Toulouse was chosen as the host of the Lord Derby Cup, the French version of the Challenge Cup, in 1935 and helped to promote the sport and gained a following of fans in the city.

It is perhaps not too surprising that a new club was set up by the name of Gaillia de Toulouse but they quickly dropped down to the amateur ranks and a couple of years later, they were replaced in the professional ranks by Toulouse Olympique in 1937.

During the war years, the club were forced to ply Rugby Union, as were every League club as the sport was outlawed by the Vichy government, and despite playing an unfamiliar sport, they would go on to enjoy some success in the 15 aside code.

At the end of the war and with Rugby League allowed once again, the club returned to the 13 aside code and but struggled in the wake of having all of their assets stripped from them, including their own ground.

The 1960’s and 70’s were the golden years for the club as they win the Elite 1 league title on numerous occasions and would make it through to the Lord Derby cup final but it took until the 2013-14 season for them to finally pick up a cup win.

After struggling in the lower reaches of the semi-pro game in France for much of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, not too much news worthy happened for the club up until the 1995 season when the club changed their name to the Toulouse Spaces thanks to a link up with an aerospace company in the town.

The club would go onto keep that name until 2002, when the club were first trying to enter the Super League on the back of a league title win in 2000, when they defeated AS Saint Esteve 20-18.

It was of course the Catalans Dragons who would be chosen for Super League in that round of franchising but the club continued to build towards that aim.

That 2013-14 cup win came on the back of their return to the French system after spending 2009 and 2010 in the British system.

After re-grouping and working towards becoming full time professional outfit, TO13 returned to the British system and after a number of years of challenging at the top of the Championship, they finally made it to the top flight competition of the Super League in 2021.
