About

The Giants are one of the most historic Rugby League clubs in the world as not only have they won almost all that there is to win in the sport but they were one of the 22 breakaway clubs that formed the new sport way back in 1895.

History

The club originated out of the local football club wanting to expand its offering. Originally, all organised spot in the town was held under the control of the Huddersfield Athletic Club and whilst it hosted a number of clubs in many sports, it was the emerging popularity of football that saw the need for better facilities.

This led to a merger with the St John’s cricket club, who had just moved to the Fartown Ground- which was the spiritual stadium of both the Giants and Huddersfield Town.

After another merger and a change of name to the Huddersfield Cricket and Athletic Club, football moved from the Rifle Field to Fartown and led to the club forming a side to participate in the popular ‘new’ sport of Rugby.

The new Rugby side started life in 1878 but with the leading Yorkshire club wanting to have more control and to be able to go professional to improve standards and excitement for fans, it didn’t take long for the new side to join the breakaway group of northern Rugby clubs to create the new sport of the Northern Union- what we now know and love as Rugby League.

The club became one of the early powerhouses of the sport which was helped by them spending big on Australian superstars such as Pat Walsh and Albert Rosenfeld.

Before the outbreak of the First World War, the cub had won the league title, the Yorkshire Cup and the Challenge Cup upon other awards in a period known as the clubs ‘Golden era’.

The club remained relatively successful up until the early 1960’s but since then there have a number of lean periods for Huddersfield.

This included the early part of the summer era where after years of struggling and on the back of financial difficulties, Huddersfield merged with the also struggling Sheffield Eagle. After a season of almost fully plying in Huddersfield, the merged club split and thankfully a new Sheffield side emerged whilst the Giants continued to struggle until there relegation.

After a few years outside of the top flight, the club re-grouped, was promoted and they are now one of the top clubs in the country once again leading to many of their fans and fans of other clubs searching for the latest Giants news.
