About
Hull Football Club, known to most as Hull or Hull FC are one of the most historic Rugby League clubs in the world as they were one of the founding members of the Northern Union.
For much of their history they have been amongst the top clubs in the country and have won all that there is to win at the club level.
History
The club were originally formed way back in 1865 by friends who had met whilst at school in York. They would meet at the St Mary’s Church where the vicar had 5 sons, with them joining the group of friends to form a team.
The club grew quickly and another side in the city formed but it didn’t take long for these 2 to merged and for the new club to be known as Hull Football Club.
Then nicknamed the All Blacks, the club became one of the founding members of the Northern Union in 1895. In that same year, the club moved to the Boulevard in West Hull which would then go onto become their home for over 100 years.
In the early years of the sport that we now all know and love as Rugby League, the club enjoyed plenty of success and attracted many big stars from Australia, including Jim Devereux but it was in 1913 when they really made headlines across the RL world.
In that year, they broke the world record transfer fee by paying £600 and £14 per game to Hunslet for Billy Batten in a hope to turn around their fortunes after reaching but losing 3 straight Challenge Cup finals between 1908-10.
That risk was soon rewarded as they would go one better in 1914 and pick up their first ever Challenge Cup trophy and their first win on national stage.
It also didn’t take long for them to pick up national titles when they won pack to back trophies in 1920 and 1921 but since then things have been quite sporadic in terms of titles and trophies.
Between 1914-2005, the club only won 1 Challenge Cup trophy in 1982 whist league titles have been infrequent for much of their history.
A lot of that has changed during the Super League era as they have enjoyed a number of years of success, especially in the cup but even the summer era started poorly.
The club struggled with its finances in the mid-late 1990’s in a period that saw them ‘merge’ with Gateshead and change their name between 1996-99 when they became the Hull Sharks.
