Location
The Super League is predominately an English competition with much of its focus on the sports northern heartlands.
It is from across what is known as the M62 corridor that the majority of the sports participants come from year upon year but the league has been an international one from its inception.
The competition acts as the top flight competition for all teams across the British pyramid and welcomes applicants from clubs in Europe and even from across the Atlantic in Canada with clubs from England, France, Wales, and Canada all participating in the league down the years.
About
The Super League revolutionised the sport in the UK by taking it from muddy pitches in winter to firmer pitches in the summer and taking the competition from the dominance of Wigan to a competitive competition and whilst it hasn’t been smooth sailing and whilst things are far from perfect, nobody can say that the Super League hasn’t been transformational for the sport.
History
Often abbreviated simply to SL and officially known as Super League Europe (SLE), the top Rugby League club competition in the Northern Hemisphere was established back in 1996, when it replaced the old First Division, moved the game from a winter sport to the summer sport and saw a number of clubs make big changes.
In the beginning a new team based in the French capital city of Paris was established to participate in the league and to make it a ‘European’ competition as it was marketed as.
The sport was also Americanised with clubs adding cheerleaders, matchday entertainment, firework displays, buggies and more but the biggest change it this regard was the name change that so many clubs adapted.
Some of those names changes worked incredibly well, such as the Bradford Bulls (from Bradford Northern), the Leeds Rhinos (from Leeds RLFC), Warrington Wolves (from Warrington RLFC) and the Castleford Tigers (from Castleford RLFC) whilst some failed miserably including the Hull Sharks, Halifax Blue Socks, and the Oldham Bears.
In an even more dramatic change that was proposed, a number of historic clubs were set to merge to create regional teams or super teams but after a hugely negative response from fans, these mergers didn’t go through.
The clubs set to merge were the 3 Wakefield teams (Wakefield Trinity, Castleford Tigers and Featherstone Rovers) who would form Calder, the 2 Kingston-Upon-Hull team (Hull FC and Hull Kingston Rovers) who would form Humberside, Salford and Oldham who would form Manchester, the Sheffield Eagles and Doncaster who would form South Yorkshire, the Warrington Wolves and Widnes who would form Cheshire and the then 4 Cumbrian teams (Whitehaven, Barrow Raiders, Carlisle and Whitehaven) who would form Cumbria.
Although these would not go ahead, financial difficulties and irregularities down the years has seen some mergers been forced through including Hull with Gateshead and Huddersfield with Sheffield and whilst that did see Gateshead and Sheffield disappear and Hull and Huddersfield all but continue as normal, the good news for the sport is that both have found a way back into the professional game for themselves.
The competition differs from most other top flight competitions in the UK as it has a salary cap that means clubs can, in theory, all spend the same and that clubs are rewarded for developing and keeping players.
That hasn’t stopped a number of clubs dominated periods down the years.
In the first decade of the competition, it was the early giants of St Helens and the Bradford Bulls who dominated things with both winning 4 of the first 10 Grand Finals.
The next 10 years saw the emergence of the Leeds Rhinos as the dominant force in the competitions as they won 6 of the next 10 finals.
Since then, things have been shared around a bit more with Leeds, Wigan and Saints excelling- although the Red Vee did win 3 straight titles between 2019-2021.
