Rugby League Championship Latest News Today

With so many stories relating to the competition as a whole and to the clubs involved, it can be difficult to search for all of the latest news stories to have broken today, but we do that searching for you.

Location

The RL Championship has become a truly international competition over the past decade or so but it remains a predominately English competition although clubs from France and Canada have participated in it and have gone on to pick up the title.

About

The RFL Championship has quickly become a strong competition in its own right and has built a reputation for been one of the most exciting and evenly matched competitions in the sport.

Over the past few years, the league has started to see an influx of international stars appearing from across the globe as more and more teams turn full time professional and attract stars from the NRL and from across the channel in France, amongst other leagues and locations.

The competition features a mix of traditional clubs based in the sports northern England heartlands, expansion clubs and historic clubs joining from abroad.

The winners of the Rugby League Championship, traditionally those club that finishers top of the league part of the season and not the club who wins the play-offs/ grand final, are awarded the Championship Leaders Shield.

History

The RFL Championship can trace its roots back to the old National League One competition for which was considered was the predecessor of the league.

As the National League One, the competition was founded in 2003 and ran until 2009, with the Championship taking over for the 2010 seaosn so it depends on how you look at it as to whether you believe the competition started in 2003 or 2010.

Of course, a 2nd tier of Rugby League goes back much farther than that in the English pyramid, with the first running of a 2nd tier coming all of the way back in 1902.

From that date, the league only ran intermittently until 1973, when the 2nd tier was firmly established and it has now been run annually ever since.

At the inauguration of the summer era, the league gained promotion and relegation to the Super league and in 1999, it was rebranded to the Northern Ford Premiership due to a first of its kind sponsorship deal.

In 2003, the NFP was reorganised into 2 league which meant the sport had 3 tiers at the professional level and the 2n tier was rebranded as the National League One, with the 3rd tier becoming the National League Three.

In 2009, the league rebranded again as the Championship and after a few years of a split season between a traditional league and the Super 8’s, where high ranking Championship clubs joined with low ranking Super League clubs to form a new league to determine promotion and relegation, the league has been run as a standard league format.

Amongst the clubs to have enjoyed success in the modern era of the 2nd tier have been the Salford Red Devils, Castleford Tigers and Hull Kingston Rovers who have gone onto establish themselves as a top flight team in the Super League as well as the Sheffield Eagles, Toronto Wolfpack, Barrow Raiders, Halifax Panthers, Featherstone Rovers, and Toulouse Olympique but it has been the Leigh Centurions who have been the most successful sides.

The club have often found themselves too good for this competition but not quite up to the level of the Super League and that has made them somewhat of a yo-yo club.
