History
As one of international Rugby League newer test playing nations, you don’t have to go too far back in time to find the establishing of Jamaica as a Rugby League playing nation.
In 2004, the Jamaica Rugby League Association was formed and just a few months later in 2005, the country’s first domestic competition was formed with 4 clubs (the Vauxhall Vultures, the Jamaica Defence Force, the Olympic Angels and the Duhaney Parks Sharks) playing the inaugural season.
The sport then spread into the student game with a number of universities taking up the sport before further expansion into junior and schools proved to be successful.
With the foundation stones set in place, the nation made it foray into the international test scene when they took on the USA in Jacksonville, Florida.
They would come up short in a 37 points to 22 loss but it would only take until October for them to pick up their first win against Canada in the Atlantic Cup.
In 2011, they would step up to the global stage when they entered qualifying for the 2013 RLWC but despite defeating South Africa, they would lose to the US and fail to qualify.
In 2016, the Jamaican national Rugby League side would head to Ireland to take on the Wolfhounds in Bray where they would pull off one of the biggest shocks in lower tier international Rugby League history as not only would they come away with the win, they would dominate the match from start to finish and win by 68 points to 16, there biggest ever win.
A similar fete would be suffered by them in 2017 when they would fail to qualify for the 2017 Rugby League World Cup.
2018 would see them try to qualify for the world cup once again but this time it would prove successful as they would defeat Canada at the paly-off stage before meeting the US in the final qualification match.
In 2021, Jamaica would face there biggest occasion to date when they would take on the England Knights in Castleford but they would also suffer their biggest loss to date as the Knights ran out 56 points to 4 winner sin what was a warm up game for the RLWC 2021, to be held in 2022.
In a game played in the USA, Jamaica pulled off of a huge shock and defeated their hosts by 16 points to 10 to make it through to the Rugby League World Cup proper for the first ever time.
In that tournament, they would face a tough group as they battled against New Zealand, Lebanon and Ireland for a place in the knockout stages.
