Over the next 30 years, they would continue to dominant interstate matches against Queensland, in part because a residency rule for the Maroons who would see their stars head to paly club matches in New South Wales and then not be able to represent their state.
That would change in the early 1980’s when the 3 match interstate series would see 1 match played under new rules, where a player could play for the state in which they made their senior debut, or their state of origin.
These experimental matches would see a huge increase in quality and more level matches, and the State of Origin series was born.
The first full series took place in 1982 and would see Queensland win the opening 3 series by 2 wins to 1 in each.
