Stadium(s)
Due to the nature of the club, they were established by a merger between the St George Dragons and the Illawarra Steelers, the Dragons have two home grounds that they can call home.
To add to the confusion, their first home ground has two names so you may know it as either the Jubilee Stadium or the Kogarah Oval (or to makes things even worst, it also has different names due to sponsorship reasons).
As you may likely expect from one of its names, the ground is oval in shape so doesn’t always offer the best viewing for a sport played on a rectangular field.
Most of the stadium is a single tier bowl like design with no cover but there is amin stand that is double tiered and does offer some cover from the sun or rain.
All in all it can hold around 20,500 fans when full which is a little bit smaller than the clubs main stadium which can hold around 23,750 fans.
That 2nd stadium is called the Wollongong Showground, which of course also has another name of the WIN Stadium, due to sponsorship reasons, and is a more traditional Rugby stadium made up of 4 separate stands in a rectangular shape.
It features a wide variety of options for those in attendance including a large all-seater main stand running down one side of the field, a double tier stands behind one set of sticks and a single tier stand behind the over stand whilst the far side of the field features a traditional grass bank.
Location
If the match takes place in Wollongong, it will be played just a stone throw from the sea as Wollongong is a coastal city in the Illawarra region of New South Wales in Australia.
It is around 50 miles south of the centre of Sydney and is one of the largest cities in Australia, although many often think of it as been a part of Sydney due to the urban sprawl the state’s largest city.
If the match is placed in Kogarah, it will take place in the Sydney suburb of Carlton, which is around 15 kilometres from the CBD of Sydney and is part of the wider St George region.
About
Despite the merged St George Illawarra side don’t have that long of history, they are made up of two historic clubs who have a long history of rivalry with the Eels, so there is always an extra interest in these matches.
