Stadium(s)
As a joint venture club, built out of a merger between the St George Dragons and the Illawarra Steelers, it is perhaps not too surprising that they continue to have two stadiums that the club consider to be ‘home’.
The first potential host venue for this match is the Wollongong Showground, also known as WIN Stadium due to a sponsorship agreement, which is the former home of the Illawarra Steelers.
The stadium is one of the most historic having hosted New South Wales local competitions, NRL matches and lots of international matches including Great Britain Lions tour matches and matches at the Rugby League World Cup when hosted in the country.
The ground is mix and match of modern parts, old parts and to be honest non-existent parts starting with a medium sized all-seater stand behind the southern end of the ground.
That looks along the whole pitch to the two tier all-seater north stand that also wraps around the north-east corner.
The eastern side of the stadium is simply a grass bank that runs the full length of the touchline and backs onto the seafront.
The final stand is the western grandstand, which has most of the ground corporate facilites and is made of two tiers, with the views of sea from the upper tier been one of the best views in the sport.
All in all, that comes together for a capacity of around 23-24,000 fans for matches played in Wollongong.
The clubs second home is the Jubilee Oval, also known as either the Jubilee Stadium or the Kogarah Oval, which is based in the Carlton suburb of Sydney.
As you would probably expect from the name of the stadium, this ground is oval in shape and offers worse views of the action, with much of the stadium been either a very small terrace of seating close to the pitch or a grass bank heading back from there.
There is one main stand, which is an all seater one with a roof, whilst ne end of the pitch features a single tier stand, but this one is open to the elements.
All in all, that allows for around 20,000 fans to watch the action when played at Kogarah.
Location
The merged club represent the Illawarra and St George regions of New South Wales, in the greater Sydney region, with Illawarra been a coastal region to the south of central Sydney and St George sitting between the Sydney CBD and the Sutherland shires, close to the airport and close to Botany Bay.
The Wollongong Showgrounds is located just to the east of the centre of Wollongong, which is due south of the city of Sydney and one of the cities commuter towns.
The Jubilee Oval is much more central and sits almost centrally between the suburbs of Carlton and Kogarah, which sits across the aby from Sydney Airport and Botany and to the southwest of downtown Sydney.
About
This is a battle between two clubs who have two different histories, with the hosts having their pre-merger and post-merger history whilst the Warriors have their own pre-NRL history when they were a local based side playing as the Auckland Warriors.
