Stadium(s)
Things can and do get a little bit complicated when it comes to the stadiums of the Tigers as due to the merged nature of the club, they were formed when the Balmain Tigers and Western Suburbs Magpies merged with each other in 1999, they have two grounds they call home and also play out of a third stadium for big matches.
There first ground is the Leichhardt Oval, which is the home ground of Balmain, which despite the name, it is anow a traditional rectangular shaped Rugby League stadium.
The ground is one of the more historic in the NRL and still features many traditional aspects including a grass bank, concrete terracing and little in the way of shelter if the weather turns bad, or if the sun is strong.
The bulk of fans are housed in the grounds 1 main stand, which also offers basic corporate facilities and all of that comes together to be able to host around 20,000 fans when full.
The clubs second ‘home’ ground is the Campbelltown Stadium, which is the home of the Western Suburbs, and is more oval in shape.
The ground features 1 large bowl design that is open to the elements in the main aside from a little bit of cover along the touchline and for the main stand that also has some corporate facilities.
The ground in many ways reminds me of a traditional NFL stadium and whilst it is perhaps past its best nowadays, it does give an impressive look from above when packed out.
That is because much of the ‘stands’ behind both sticks are mostly grass banking so people can pack in tight to each other to provide a capacity of around 17,500 for NRL matches.
With both of the Tigers main stadiums been in need of upgrading to modern standards and with both been on the smaller side of things in the NRL capacity wise, it is perhaps not too surprising that many of their bigger matches are taken to the newly build and incredible impressive Western Sydney Stadium.
A big derby game such as this will likely be moved there, which is actually the home ground of the Eels, but whilst the Tigers will give up some home comforts, although they are used to playing there, it does allow for around 30,000 fans to be unattendance and for much more revenue to be made from its impressive corporate facilities.
Location
It depends on where the match will be played but no matter which ground it is to take place at, the Tigers are based in Sydney, and this will be a Sydney derby.
The Leichhardt Oval is located in the Lilyfield suburb of the Sydney Inner West whilst the Campbelltown Stadium is located in Leumeah a suburb to the southwest of Sydney, around 50 kilometres to the south-west of the downtown CBD of Sydney.
The chances are that a huge game such as this one will take place at the impressive Western Sydney Stadium, which is located in the Parramatta suburb of Greater Western Sydney, around 15 miles west of the Sydney CBD.
About
This is a derby game in every sense of the word as both clubs are based not only in the city of Sydney, but both are based in the west of the city.
There have been many incredible matches down the years between the two and it is always a game that grabs the attention of both fans based in the build up to it.
