Stadium(s)

Canberra Stadium is home to the Raiders is the host venue for matches between the Raiders and Sharkies when played in Canberra.

The ground is located next to the Australian Institute of Sport in the Australian capital city and is the largest stadium in the city.

Since opening in 1977 in time for the Pacific Conference Games, the stadium continued to host other major international events until the Canberra Raiders moved in in 1990.

Since then, the ground has had many changes to it including removing the running track, but it still retains a unique oval style that makes it stands out over most over stadiums in the NRL that are the more traditional rectangular shape.

It is an easy ground to recognise when watching along on tv as the vast single tiered stands are mostly uncovered but the 2-tiered stands down the touchline due have a small roof covering some of the seats and the bulk of the stadium’s corporate facilities.

When full, the stadium can host around 25,000 fans and no matter how full it is for Raiders games, there is always a great atmosphere built up before kick-off to really set things up for a great 80 minutes of action.

As well as hosting Raiders matches, the stadium has also hosted numerous international test matches including games at the Rugby League World Cup when hosted in the country.

The match takes place in the Australian capital city of Canberra, which is also the country’s largest inland city and the 8th largest city overall.

Due to many government departments been based in the city, many people move to Canberra from other parts of the country for work and that means no matter who are visiting, there are usually plenty of away fans in attendance despite the huge distances between Canberra and other Rugby League locations.

Canberra sits away from the coast, around 150 miles southwest of Sydney, 400 miles northeast of Melbourne, 600 miles southwest of Brisbane and 2000 miles east southeast of Perth.

This is a battle between two of the smaller clubs in the NRL but two clubs who have continued to punch above their weight.

The matches between the 2 are always great indicators of where they are in terms of form and belief as both can have up and down seasons.
