Stadium(s)
For a huge match up such as this one, the chances are that if Tonga are hosting it will take place in New Zealand itself, as that has become the home away from home for the Mate Ma’a. With no large stadium in Tonga, they move most of their matches to New Zealand where there is a massive diaspora of fans waiting to pack out the stands and get behind their country.
The stadium that is most often used is the impressive Mount Smart Stadium, home of the New Zealand Warriors, which is a large stadium in Auckland.
Famed for been built into the remnants of a quarry and on and inactive volcano, the stadium features 2 huge grandstands that run the length of the field and some temporary seating behind the sticks.
One of the main stands is slightly larger than the other, allowing it to host the bulk of the stadiums corporate facilites, its media facilites and everything needed for the players such as the changing rooms and the benches.
Well known as one of the best atmospheres in the NRL, that continues on the international stage when Tonga are in ton as their fans bring lots of colour and noise to the action but for a matchup such as this one, when there will be lots of fans for the ‘away’ side in attendance as well, the atmosphere should be that bit more special.
Location
If the match does take place at Mount Smart, it will the Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand that hosts the action.
The city is the huge of the sport both at club level at on the international stage and it is also somewhere where there is a huge diaspora of Tongan living there.
That will mean fans of both countries will live work, socialise and even go to the match along side a fan of their rival nation.
The build up to the match across New Zealand will see it dominate the sporting news and come game day, the fans across Tonga will be out if force and the island will come to a standstill including the iconic pick-up truck parade.
Noise, colour, passion, packed stands and some of the best rugby players on the planet, this is a match that brings you it all.
