About

Hull Kingston Rovers are one of the oldest Rugby league clubs in the world and are known for their passionate fanbase that often follow the club in large number no matter where they are playing.

The club have really proven to be amongst the most progressive of the summer era both on the field and off of the field which means there is often lots of interest in news relating to them which can now easily be read on this page.

History

The Robins are one of the oldest Rugby League club sin the world after been established way back in 1882 but although they were from the heartlands of the sport at the time of the ‘great schism’, the Rovers didn’t join the burgeoning Northern Union until 1897.

Upon there establishing, the club were known as the Kingston Amateurs and they played at Albert Street.

After moving around different grounds in the city, the club moved to Hessle Road for the 1888 seaosn which came just after they changed name to Hull Kingston Rovers in 1885.

After the majority of top clubs in the region leaving the RFU in 1895, Hull KR quickly became one of the top RFU sides in Yorkshire and with the top players amongst their, they quickly established themselves upon joining the Northern Union as a side to beat.

Although the club did enjoy early success at the regional level, including periods spent playing in the Lancashire leagues, it did take some time to celebrate on the national level.

After reaching their first ever Challenge Cup final in the 1904-05 seaosn, where they lost to Warrignton, it took until 1980 for them to actually win their first cup, in an iconic match at Wembley against their arch rivals Hull FC.

The club did enjoy earlier success in the league however with their first national championship coming way back in 1923, which they quickly back up with a win in 1925, but it then took until there late 70’s early 80’s golden period for further success.

The late 80’s saw the club’s on the field performances start to wain and their ground started to really show its age and that led to the club move to new Craven Park but despite spending a record fee of over £72,000 on George Fairbairn, the club were relegated to the 2nd tier.

At the end of the 94/95 season, things got even worse when the club were relegated once again but despite that, the club resisted calls for them to ‘merge’ with Hull FC to form Humberside and gain entry into the Super League.

As a separate entity, it took over 10 years for them to reach the new top flight as although they gained promotion to the second tier in 1996, they struggled for much of the mid-to-late 90’swith financial difficulties.

After been taken over, spending relatively big sums of money, and constantly battling at the top of the table it took until the 1996 seaosn for them to gain promotion to Super League.

Although Rovers would go onto establish themselves in the top flight, they did suffer from poor form in 2016 which culminated in them losing the Million Pound Game to Salford in the most dramatic way but with former Kangaroos manager Tim Sheens at the helm, they quickly gained promotion just a year alter and have now established themselves in the top flight once again.
